MASSACHUSETTS
The
American Textile History Museum will host SITES’ Suited for Space in Lowell, 12.08. 

NORTH CAROLINA
The North Carolina Transportation Museum will host SITES’ Journey Stories in Spence, 01.05.

TEXAS
The National Postal Museum will host the EdLab! Professional Development workshop at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen, 01.09.

LOUISIANA
The National World War II Museum will host SITES’ Congressional Gold Medal in New Orleans, 01.11. The museum will also participate in the National Museum of American History’s Let’s Do History public program in New Orleans, 01.15.

FLORIDA
Kevin Gover, Director of the National Museum of the American Indian, will deliver remarks and observations on Native American art and identity at the Frost Art Museum & The Wolfsonian in Miami, 01.12.

Roger Launius, space curator at the National Air and Space Museum, will present a public lecture on the history and possible futures for human and robotic spaceflight at the Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach, 01.19. 

GEORGIA
The David J. Sencer CDC Museum will host Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s Design with the Other 90%: CITIES exhibition in Atlanta, 01.22.

The Smithsonian Community Coral Reef is on view at the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Iowa. The coral reef, composed of thousands of crocheted natural forms, creates a version of the Great Barrier Reef with loopy “kelps,” fringed “anemones,” crenellated “sea slugs,” and curlicue “corals.” On loan from the National Museum of Natural History

Imagine you too are standing on a sun-dappled lawn picking wildflowers just like the figure in Dear Fay, one of several painted ceramic sculptures on loan to the Springfield Museum of Art in Springfield, Ohio, for their exhibition Jack Earl: A Modern Master- A Retrospective. On loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, through January 6, 2013.

Native Words, Native Warriors tells the remarkable story of Indian soldiers from more than a dozen tribes who used their Native languages in the service of the U.S. military. On view at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, through March 2013. Organized for travel by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service

Sick of dreary white, winter days? Head to the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida, for Vibrant Color: Vintage Celebrity Portraits from the Harry Warnecke Studio, a collection of color photographs of celebrities who rose to fame at a time when color photography was in its infancy. Organized by the National Portrait Gallery, the exhibition is on view until January 12, 2013.

While you’re in Florida, stop by the Frost Art Museum in Miami. On view until January 13, 2013 is Reflections Across Time: Seminole Portraits, a collaboration with fellow Affiliate Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum in Clewiston, Florida. Showing more than 150 years of portraits of Seminole leaders and tribal members, the exhibition features works of art from the National Museum of the American Indian, National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

In 1898, New York photographer Gertrude Käsebier watched the grand parade of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, on its way to Madison Square Garden. Inspired by what she saw, she photographed the Lakota (Sioux) travelling with the show in her 5th Ave studio. The result was a set of prints that are among the most compelling of Käsebier’s celebrated body of work. See Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Warriors: Photographs by Gertrude Käsebier at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, Washington, through February 9, 2013. On loan from the National Museum of American History and includes artifacts from fellow Affiliate, Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming.

Mittens, boots, puffy jacket and scarf may work in our winter weather, but imagine what astronauts had to prepare for when venturing into space! Suited for Space, an exhibition from the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service and the National Air and Space Museum, explores the evolution of spacesuit development from the first quarter of the 20th century until the dawn of the shuttle era. On view at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts, until March 3, 2013.

Ah.. it’s back-to-school time, and back to great events happening across the country at Affiliates! 

FLORIDA
The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum will be hosting the exhibition Reflections Across Time: Seminole Portraits featuring loans from SAAM, NPG, and NMAI in Clewiston, 9.1.

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra will perform at The Museum of Arts & Sciences and give a workshop at Stetson Univeristy School of Music with an introduction from Harold Closter in Daytona Beach, 9.07.
MOAS will also host Richard Kurin to lecture on The Hope Diamond and book signing, 9.20.


TEXAS
The Institute of Texan Cultures will host SITES’ IndiVisible in San Antonio, 9.15.


OHIO
The Ohio Historical Society will host an Affiliations Announcement with Harold Closter in Columbus, 9.18.

The Springfield Museum of Art will be hosting the exhibition Jack Earl: A Modern Master-A Retrospective featuring loans from SAAM in Springfield, 9.22.


NATIONWIDE
:
10 Affiliates from across the country contributed educational materials for Smithsonian Teachers Night in Washington, D.C., 9.28.

35 Affiliates will open their doors for free as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day, 9.29.

 

Kudos Affiliates! September 2012

As summer heats up, so too do Affiliate accomplishments!

The Michigan State University Museum (East Lansing, Michigan) received a new grant from the Asian Cultural Council, New York City, to establish a partnership between the Michigan State University Museum and Yunnan Nationalities Museum, in Kunming, China. The $12,000 grant is aimed at creating new resources online that can be used to access Chinese folklife and ethnographic collections by scholars, museums and the public.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (Cincinnati, Ohio) will receive a $1.8 million grant over three years as part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s America Healing program. The three-year grant will be used for programs to increase student and public awareness and understanding about the history of racial oppression in this country.

The GAR Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to the Western Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, Ohio), for educational programming at Hale Farm & Village.

Three Affiliates received Smithsonian Community Grants program sponsored by MetLife Foundation as part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibitions Services (SITES):

  • Institute of Texan Cultures (San Antonio, Texas) received $5,000 to fund programming that fosters self-identification and pride for dual heritage African-Native Texans. The grant will support honoraria for several scholars, craft and educational materials, and the marketing and advertising of events related to the themes of IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas.
  • San Diego Museum of Man (San Diego, California) was awarded $3,750 to fund the honoraria of Native American skate industry professionals who will participate in a panel discussion. The grant will also support the marketing of programming related to the themes of Ramp it Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America.
  • Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum (McMinnville, Oregon) will receive $2,160 to fund the busing of economically disadvantaged and minority youth in the regional Portland area to view Black Wings: An American Dream of Flight.

A technology upgrade for Ellen Noel Art Museum (Odessa, Texas) is the result of a Permian Basin Area Foundation $5,000 grant. This technology upgrade will help support the museum’s existing website and social media sites.

American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) announced the winners of their 2012 Leadership in History Awards Winners including the following Affiliates:

  • Arizona State Museum (Tucson, Arizona) for the exhibit Many Mexicos: Vistas de la Frontera
  • Conner Prairie Interactive History Park (Fishers, Indiana) for the exhibit 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana.
  • Montana Historical Society (Bozeman, Montana) and Montana Office of Public Instruction Indian Education for All Divisions for Best Practices in Museum Education: Museums and Schools as Co-Educators.
  • North Carolina Museum of History (Raleigh, North Carolina) for the exhibit The Story of North Carolina.
  • Ohio Historical Society (Columbus, Ohio) for the exhibit Controversy: Pieces You Don’t Normally See; for the Ohio as America Online 4th Grade Textbook; and for the Ohio History Service Corps-AmeriCorps Program.

On the horizon at SITES

Our friends at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) are working on some great upcoming exhibitions, debuting in 2014.  Book early!

The Newcomb Pottery enterprise ‘played a significant role in promoting art, education, and employment for the betterment of women,’ particularly Southern women.

Women, Art, and Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise, organized by the Newcomb Art Gallery and SITES, brings together more than 175 objects representing 45 years of uncommon achievement in American arts and crafts from 1895-1940.

For the first time in 30 years, Americans will experience a major exhibition of Newcomb treasures from the gallery at Tulane University and other prominent collections.  The exhibit will feature recent acquisitions and dazzling examples of the iconic pottery as well as lesser known textiles, metalwork, jewelry, bookbinding and historical artifacts.Decorative yet useful, iconic yet varied, richly imagined and precisely crafted by hand–the objects alone tell an eloquent story. Women, Art, and Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise offers new insights into the Newcomb community–the philosophy, the friendships, the craftsmanship, and the extraordinary women who made an enduring mark on American art and industry.

SITES is pleased to announce plans for the national tour of Aesop’s Fables by Jacob Lawrence, an exhibition featuring 23 illustrations of these classic moral stories by this renowned American artist.  In 1969 Lawrence created this series of lively ink drawings to illustrate and interpret Aesop’s Fables for a contemporary audience.  Fables such as “The Tortoise and The Hare”, “The Ant and The Grasshopper”, and “The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” are known and loved world-wide and are still often used to entertain and educate young children.

Nature’s Best Photography:  Windland Smith Rice International Awards
