North Carolina

The Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington hosts a virtual talk with Dr. Krewasky A. Salter, former military subject matter expert at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Dr. Salter will speak on African American Citizenship and Service, 11.4 at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

Iowa
The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque will be hosting several screenings of Smithsonian Channel programs including America’s Mississippi: The Headwaters; The Heartland; and The Bayou in December.

Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City will screen the Smithsonian Channel programs Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story and The Pacific War in Color in December.

The North Carolina Museum of History will screen the Smithsonian Channel film Civil War 360: Fight for Freedom in Raleigh, 1.8.

MASSACHUSETTS

View of the new Spark!Lab maker space for youth at the Springfield Museums in Massachusetts

The new Spark!Lab at the Springfield Museums, a dynamic learning space for families to explore invention and innovation.

The Springfield Museums open a new Spark!Lab Smithsonian, followed by a lecture on Springfield as a Place of Invention by Eric Hintz, historian at the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the National Museum of American History, in Springfield, 1.17.

IOWA
The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium will screen several Smithsonian Channel films including Epic Yellowstone: Down the River Wild, Aerial America: Wilderness and more, in Dubuque, 1.18-20.

OKLAHOMA
The Oklahoma History Center will screen Smithsonian Channel films Drinks, Crime and Prohibition-Gangsters and G-Men and Drinks, Crime, and Prohibition-Flappers and Bootleggers, in Oklahoma City, 1.18.

MASSACHUSETTS
Framingham State University wraps up its 18-month series on the Moon Landing in Context with a day-long symposium entitled, Sustainable Space, Sustainable Earth: From Ideas to Action, featuring comments by Affiliations National Outreach Manager Jennifer Brundage in Framingham, 12.6.


NORTH CAROLINA
The American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service opens at the Greensboro History Museum in Greensboro on 12.7.

 

The Cape Fear Museum will be screening several Smithsonian Channel films throughout December, including Mass Extinction: Life at the Brink; The Green Book: Guide to Freedom; David Attenborough’s Rise of Animals: Triumph of the Vertebrates; and Polar Bear Town: Quest for Cubs in Wilmington, check website for exact dates.

Lots of winter activity in Affiliateland – enjoy!

FLORIDA

The Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access will offer a teacher professional development workshop on using digital resources in collaboration with the Frost Art Museum in Miami, 2.2.

Tower at the Stockholm airport, featured in the Art of the Airport Tower exhibition.

The Mennello Museum of American Art opens the Art of the Airport Tower exhibition from the National Air and Space Museum, in Orlando, 2.4.

IOWA

Affiliations staff members will visit the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library for their affiliation announcement in Cedar Rapids, 2.8.

CONNECTICUT

Paula Johnson, curator at the National Museum of American History, will present a lecture about cookbooks and mid-century American food culture at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, 2.16.

ILLINOIS

Eduardo Díaz, director of the Smithsonian Latino Center will deliver a talk on Latino representation at the Smithsonian at the Schingoethe Center of Aurora University in Aurora, 2.21.

ARIZONA

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, will open Paul Calle’s Life of Exploration: From the Mountains to the Moon exhibition with loans from the National Postal Museum and the National Air and Space Museum, in Scottsdale, 2.4.

NEW YORK

The Rockwell Museum will open Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery, 2.8. National Portrait Gallery director Kim Sajet will deliver the kickoff talk for the Museum’s spring lecture series on Questioning Identity, in Corning, 2.26.

NATIONWIDE

The Smithsonian Channel is collaborating with several Affiliates to screen their new show: The Green Book: Guide to Freedom during Black History Month –

Shark girls, genomes and zombies… oh my! It’s October in Affiliateland.

CONNECTICUT

Mallory Warner, Museum Specialist from the National Museum of American History, will give a talk on women’s medical uniforms in World War I at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, 10.11.

CALIFORNIA

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes will host a workshop for teachers on Fostering Global Competence in the Classroom with the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access, in Los Angeles, 10.13.

The Japanese American National Museum will also host Fostering Global Competence workshops for teachers in Los Angeles, 10.20.

FLORIDA

The Orange County Regional History Center opens the Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code exhibition produced by the National Museum of Natural History, in Orlando, 10.13.

The South Florida Museum opens SITES’ A New Moon Rises exhibition in Bradenton, 10.20.

HAWAII

The Lyman Museum and Mission House will host a screening of Shark Girl from the Smithsonian Channel in Hilo, 10.15-16.

TENNESSEE

The American Museum of Science and Energy is holding a grand opening event to welcome visitors to its new location, an 18,000-square-foot space with a newly-designed exhibit gallery featuring state-of-the-art interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, in Oak Ridge, 10.18.

MARYLAND

The Smithsonian Associates’ day-long study tour, 18th-Century Annapolis: Architecture and Decorative Arts, will visit the structures and gardens of Historic Annapolis, 10.19.

OHIO

The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology will host the Let’s Do History workshop for teachers in collaboration with the National Museum of American History, in Newark, 10.22-23.

MULTIPLE STATES

Five Affiliates will facilitate teens’ virtual participation in the Smithsonian Secretary’s Youth Advisory Council, kicking off in Washington, D.C., 10.24. Thanks to the Rockwell Museum (Corning, NY); the Arab American National Museum (Dearborn, MI); the Upcountry History Museum (Greenville, SC); the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (Cincinnati, OH); and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (Fort Worth, TX) for your partnership.

PENNSYLVANIA

Curator Eric Jentsch from the National Museum of American History will discuss zombies in pop culture as part of Living Dead Meets Walking Dead at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, 10.26.

Summer is heating up with Affiliate activity coast to coast!

NATIONWIDE
Eight Affiliates will be hosting interns from the Smithsonian Latino Center’s Young Ambassadors Program this summer, including the Adler Planetarium (Chicago); California Science Center (Los Angeles); Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (Fort Worth); History Colorado (Denver); HistoryMiami (Miami); Museum of Latin American Art  (Long Beach, CA), Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Miami); The Witte Museum (San Antonio), 7.5-8.2.18

MISSOURI
The Saint Louis Science Center will host a lecture by Dr. Margaret Weitekamp, curator at the National Air and Space Museum, on Star Trek: Science Fiction to Science Fact in St. Louis, 7.6.

TENNESSEE
The International Storytelling Center will host a Smithsonian Channel Screening of A Star-Spangled Story: Battle for America on 7.9 and My Big Bollywood Wedding on 7.23 in Jonesborough.

Several Affiliates are screening shows from the Smithsonian Channel this month.

MARYLAND
Historic Annapolis hosts a talk by Dr. Kenneth Cohen, curator at the National Museum of American History, on A 17-19th Century Pub Crawl: Taverns in Early America in Annapolis, 7.10.

VIRGINIA
The Hermitage Museum and Gardens will host a lecture by Cynthia Brown, Manager of Horticulture Collections Management and Education at Smithsonian Gardens, on the Archives of American Gardens: Capturing Garden History in Norfolk, 7.11.

NORTH CAROLINA
The North Carolina Museum of History will host a screening of the Smithsonian Channel film, A Star-Spangled Story: Battle for America, in Raleigh, 7.11.

TEXAS
The Carver Museum, part of the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department will host a screening of the Smithsonian Channel film Black Wings in Austin, 7.14.

SOUTH CAROLINA
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate will host two teacher workshops featuring educators from the Smithsonian on Fostering Wonder and Introducing Astronomy to Young Children in Greenville, 7.24-25.
