The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum explores the early history of the Nation's Oldest Port Heritage Area on the northeast coast of Florida. Its exhibitions and preservation work reflect the cultural diversity of the early settlers in the region, including American Indian, Spanish, British, and African influences. Two programs, the Lighthouse Archaeology Maritime Program and the First Light Maritime Society explore underwater archaeology, researching over 170 shipwrecks lost in the waters of the region and giving high school students the opportunity to work directly with the archaeologists. St. Aiugustine Museum has hosted a number of Smithsonian scholars to present educational programs.
