The South Carolina State Museum collections, reflecting the essence and diversity of South Carolina, explore natural history, cultural history, and science and technology through the lens of the state's history. Exhibition highlights include life-size replicas of the Best Friend of Charleston—the first American-built locomotive—and the H.L. Hunley, a Civil War-era confederate submarine. The museum has exhibited artifacts on loan from the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum. The Museum has participated in the Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos program.
