The North Carolina Museum of History, with over 150,000 objects in its collections, promotes the understanding of the history and material culture of North Carolina and the Southeast. Permanent exhibitions highlight the state’s military history and decorative arts, as well as achievements in athletics in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Through the museum’s affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, its collection items have appeared in the 2013 exhibition Thomas Day: Master Craftsman and Free Man of Color at Renwick Gallery of Smithsonian American Art Museum. Starring North Carolina, an exhibit about film and television in the Tarheel State, featured 15 artifacts from the National Museum of American History, including the “coonskin” cap worn by Fess Parker in the Davy Crockett television series.
