First opened in 1931, the Union Station has become today’s Durham Museum, showcasing the original art deco–style architecture and its former glory as one of the busiest stations in the nation. Visitors can marvel at the Great Hall, which features a ceiling of sculptured plaster, with painted gold and silver leaf trim and six restored bronze, copper, and glass chandeliers. The museum’s permanent exhibitions highlight the history of the region. And traveling exhibitions from the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, National Archives, and the Field Museum cover an array of subjects from culture to science.
