The Carolinas Aviation Museum houses a collection of over 50 aircraft and an array of smaller historical items related to aviation in North and South Carolina. A highlight of the collections is the Airbus A320 from US Airways Flight 1549, the flight that made the emergency water landing known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” As a Smithsonian Affiliate, the Carolinas Aviation Museum hosted a 2002 Smithsonian traveling exhibition, At the Controls, which allowed local visitors in Charlotte to view large scale photographs of the cockpits of a number of aircraft and spacecraft in the National Air and Space Museum collections. In 2016 the Museum hosted Smithsonian forensic ornithologist Carla Dove as part of a special STEM program for young girls.
