The B&O Railroad Museum is universally-recognized as the birthplace of American railroading. A National Historic Landmark, the Museum displays the oldest, most historic and most comprehensive American railroad collections in the world in its 40-acre historic site and roundhouse. The Museum is home to many significant Smithsonian artifacts, including the Civil War-era Pioneer locomotive; the historic Stourbridge Lion (the first locomotive in North America); and approximately 100 models of locomotives that many consider to be the finest examples of railroad scale models ever produced. The Museum offers a range of educational activities for the whole family, including train rides, reading programs, lecture series and holiday events. The Museum also operates the Ellicott City Station, the oldest surviving railroad station in America.
