The largest museum in Alaska, the Anchorage Museum highlights place and people of the North and the distinct environment. Its CoLab offers hands-on, creative activities and began as collaboration with the Smithsonian Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. In 1994, The Arctic Studies Center, a federal research and education program that is part of the National Museum of Natural History, partnered with the Anchorage Museum to open an Anchorage office. Through this partnership, the Smithsonian has loaned hundreds of indigenous Alaskan artifacts to their place of origin for them to be studied by Alaska Native elders, artists, and scholars.
