The American Museum of Science and Energy was founded in 1949 in an old wartime cafeteria inOak Ridge, TN - the site of the "secret city" where the Manhattan Project was carried out to produce the first nuclear weapons during World War II. Originally named the American Museum of Atomic Energy, the museum's guided tours educated visitors about the peaceful uses of atomic energy . The present facility, opened in 1975, exhibits artifacts and documents from the Manhattan Project and serves as a center for science and technology exploration.
