The Adler Planetarium plays an important role in science education and inspires young people—particularly women and minorities—to pursue careers in science. The Adler houses one of the world's finest collections of astronomical artifacts, including treasures such as the world's oldest known window sundial (dated 1529) and a telescope made by William Herschel. Its exhibition begins with astronaut Jim Lovell's life and career, featuring memorabilia and the fully restored Gemini 12 spacecraft, on loan from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
