The Smithsonian shares the depth and breadth of the Institution’s extraordinary collections and research with learners of all ages and educators everywhere. Our network of Smithsonian Affiliates are also leading the way in providing distance learning opportunities on a multitude of topics. Design Around Town

Design Around Town: An Activity Book serves as a fun, interactive introduction to design through storytelling. From the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the book follows 13-year-old Sofia as she travels around her hometown, noticing design everywhere she goes. Throughout her travels, users of the book will get to help Sofia try out a variety of design disciplines, from graphic design to transportation design.

Through hands-on activities, puzzles, and games, students will explore topics in STEM, history, and the arts. The guides also feature bilingual Spanish/English language content.  Smithsonian Affiliates have been instrumental in helping distribute the guides across the country.

Explore, Discover, Learn: Back to School with the Smithsonian, includes how to conduct an oral history to have intergenerational conversations about school memories, cross-curricular activities that blur the boundaries of school subjects, and profiles of exemplary educators and friends of the Smithsonian.
