Smithsonian Libraries

The Smithsonian Libraries are a hidden national treasure, where experts come to test and expand knowledge and where America and the world can turn for authentic answers. The network of 21 specialized research libraries that make up the Smithsonian Libraries provide the Institution’s museums and research centers with resources and services that are as diverse and deep as the collections, exhibits, and scholarship they support.

Education is for everyone.

There’s something at Smithsonian Libraries for learners of all ages. Through our Education Department, we offer innovative programs, access to expansive digital collections and rare treasures, immersive classroom experiences, and professional opportunities for youth and graduate students considering careers in museum and libraries.

Smithsonian Libraries Education has a variety of programs for learners of all ages:

Traveling Trunks

While these Trunks aren’t traveling at the moment, ask me about how we can plan for bringing them to your neighborhood in the future! These multimedia library kits are packed full of resources from across the Smithsonian Institution that deliver immersive experiences.

Biodiversity Heritage Library

The BHL is an open access resource for natural history literature, including beautiful illustrations of
plants and animals from libraries around the world.

Digital Library

Tens of thousands of digitized books from Smithsonian Libraries collections are fully downloadable and
available for use and reuse.

Exhibition loan services

Institutions may request the loan of items for exhibition from the Smithsonian Libraries, including rare books. Note- you must submit a written request via email one year in advance of the proposed exhibition.
