The network of 21 specialized research libraries that make up the Smithsonian Libraries provide the Institution’s museums and research centers with resources and services that are as diverse and deep as the collections, exhibits, and scholarship they support.

Biodiversity Heritage Library
The BHL is an open access resource for natural history literature, including beautiful illustrations of
plants and animals from libraries around the world.
Tens of thousands of digitized books from Smithsonian Libraries collections are fully downloadable and
available for use and reuse.
Exhibition loan services
Institutions may request the loan of items for exhibition from the Smithsonian Libraries, including rare books. Note- you must submit a written request via email one year in advance of the proposed exhibition.
