Vibe Check: A Teen Art Exhibition

Vibe Check is intended to give teens ages 13–19 a safe space to express themselves through art. With many students having to adjust to the challenges of post-pandemic life, art continues to be more important than ever as an avenue of communication and connection. Whether through visual artwork, digital media, social media, video, creative writing, spoken word, music, or other performing arts, the exhibit will include works that communicate what it means to be a teen in the world today.

Juror: Sarah Cappo, Teen Program Specialist at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

Juror's Statement:

“As someone who manages teen programs, I spend a lot of time thinking about what it means to be a teen in the world today. As someone who manages teen programs at a contemporary art museum, I spend even more time thinking about how teens fit into the museum’s mission to provide a platform for the art and artists of our time.

The contents of this exhibit delineate the breadth of teen experiences today. These pieces are joyful and genuine, reflective and revolutionary. While many of the emotions expressed here are universal, the realities of these artists’ lived experiences are very different than anyone who was a teen before the COVID-19 pandemic.

As you look through the works in this exhibition, I hope you find works that surprise you, resonate with you, and give insight into the lives of teenagers today. I know from my own work that this generation has powerful ideas to share; all we have to do is listen.”
