Meaning in Music Digital Shorts series

“Meaning in Music,” an original digital series from Smithsonian Channel and MTV News.
Music has long been a companion movement to people’s desire for change–with hip hop being a prime example. Since its emergence in the late 1970s, it’s offered a soundtrack of struggle and proven an ally of aspiration. By not shying away from powerful issues such as social justice, race, class, gender, and even fashion, hip hop has come a long way from rank outsider to the ubiquitous force it is today. Join us as we examine the impact of an often-quoted, much-misunderstood art form that has become an indelible part of the culture.

Featuring Smithsonian Curators From: Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, National Museum of African American History & Culture, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Folklife
