The Hiller Aviation Museum, founded by helicopter designer and inventor Stanley Hiller Jr., opened to the public in 1998, featuring over 50 aircraft from more than a century of aviation history. The museum celebrates the spirit of discovery and innovation of aviation pioneers, whose creativity made flight a reality. The Hiller is currently home to one of the oldest aircraft in the Smithsonian collections—the Maupin-Lanteri Black Diamond, which was built in California in 1911. Since becoming a Smithsonian Affiliate in 2009, the museum has taken part in Smithsonian magazine’s annual Museum Day Live! event, which spotlights museums nationwide.
