The Charlotte Museum of History offers audience-focused programs and exhibitions, providing a historical context for understanding how past conditions and decisions impact the region today and shape its future. The museum houses more than 10,000 objects, papers, and photographs with a concentration on southern Piedmont and Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hezekiah Alexander House, built in 1774 and located on the grounds of the Charlotte Museum of History, is the oldest surviving structure in Mecklenburg County. The museum has hosted Smithsonian traveling exhibitions and a guest speaker from the National Museum of the American Indian.
