Built in 1914 as a working train station, Union Station Kansas City reopened in 1999 after renovation. The magnificence of the Grand Hall's 95-foot ceiling, with three 3,500-pound chandeliers and a six-foot-wide clock hanging in its central arch, is now again on view. More than a historical landmark, the Union Station is home to many venues, such as a learning station for Spark!Lab, the flagship educational initiative of the Smithsonian Lemelson Center. It also includes exhibition halls, a planetarium, a theater, and a performance stage, allowing it to host traveling exhibitions and offer hands-on activities related to science and history. Union Station has hosted several Smithsonian scholars as part of the Smithsonian Scholars in the Schools program.
