2014 National Conference

All current Smithsonian Affiliates are invited to Washington, D.C., June 23-25, 2014, for an exclusive conference that exposes Affiliates to new programs, exhibits and collections. Instructional sessions, hands-on workshops, and behind-the-scenes tours are led by Smithsonian and Affiliate subject experts.

    **Participants are encouraged to complete the IPOP quiz and watch the Experience Preference Theory as a New Way to Understand and Respond to Diversity webinar prior to the workshop for a full experience. Seating is limited to 16 guests

The 21st Century Museum Leadership Seminar is not part of the Affiliations Conference. This is a special offering for Smithsonian Affiliate staff that will take place at the George Washington University.
 
Thursday, June 26: 21st Century Museum Leadership Seminar (Additional fees apply. Click here to apply)
  • Introduction of participants and faculty
  • The Leadership Challenge Today: Overview of nonprofit and museum realities and why leadership is important
  • Strategic Thinking: New approaches to sustainability, managing change, and encouraging creativity. Museum directors share models of transformative vision.
  • Practicum on Strategy Implementation: Creative approaches to risk taking, decision making, and implementing change
  • Project management; building a team and executing projects
  • Self-assessment and interpersonal skills; building trust and leading from the middle
  • Reception at Smithsonian Institution Castle and visit annual Folklife Festival
Friday, June 27: 21st Century Museum Leadership Seminar (Additional fees apply. Click here to apply)
  • Strategic Finance: The leader's role in developing budgets and making decisions about finance
  • Fundraising: Trends, policies, strategies and best practices
  • Communications, Advocacy and Collaboration: Implementing change at your museum
  • Participants will have the opportunity to work with faculty on Personal Action Plans for Change
