Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Region: Mid-Atlantic
Website: http://www.nmajh.org
Description: The National Museum of American Jewish History is dedicated to exploring and celebrating the history of Jews in America, and is in the midst of a capital project to erect a landmark building on Independence Mall. The new facility will house exhibitions and programs, a theater, classrooms, and an education and resource center.
Profile: The National Museum of American Jewish History is interested in borrowing objects to enhance their permanent exhibition, "Creating American Jews," which explores the evolution of Jewish identity in America. The exhibition tells the story of people searching for ways to remain connected to the heritage of their past while creating their own identities and place in the American culture of their time. The museum is also in the process of developing a new core exhibit that will be complemented by the collections of the National Museum of American History. In addition, NMAJH has proposed to work with the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies to create curriculum for use in the schools.
At this time, the museum shares its location with historic Congregation Mikveh Israel, one of the first organized Jewish congregations in this country, and known as the "Synagogue of the American Revolution" and is in the middle of $100 million capital campaign to build a new museum on Independence Mall.
